Preservation of the Late Buddhist rock heritage of Swat – digitization and preventive conservation

Community-based climate adaptation training and urgent conservation of Buddhist rock reliefs in Swat Valley, alongside digital documentation.

In Pakistan’s Swat Valley, seasonal droughts and heavy rainfall are triggering landslides and erosion that threaten ancient Buddhist rock reliefs and inscriptions.

Essanoor Associates is leading a conservation project that combines community-based training in climate change adaptation with digital documentation. Thirty of the most at-risk rock reliefs will receive urgent physical conservation. The dual approach ensures local capacity to care for heritage while preserving cultural assets digitally for future generations.
