Preservation of the Late Buddhist rock heritage of Swat – digitization and preventive conservation
Community-based climate adaptation training and urgent conservation of Buddhist rock reliefs in Swat Valley, alongside digital documentation.
| In Pakistan’s Swat Valley, seasonal droughts and heavy rainfall are triggering landslides and erosion that threaten ancient Buddhist rock reliefs and inscriptions. Essanoor Associates is leading a conservation project that combines community-based training in climate change adaptation with digital documentation. Thirty of the most at-risk rock reliefs will receive urgent physical conservation. The dual approach ensures local capacity to care for heritage while preserving cultural assets digitally for future generations. |
