Community Based Conservation of Silk Route Heritage

Digital documentation and repairs of historic buildings in Gilgit-Baltistan, supported by a residency for Shu craftspeople.

Extreme weather events threaten architectural and artistic heritage in northern Pakistan that are reminiscent of the silk route exchanges particularly the assets of Pinjra Kari, Khatamband and Ceiling painting in Kharmang Palace, and the Iwan at Gholbasher house in Yasin. The craft of Shu-making is being revitalised via a residency focusing on endangered craft practices while strengthening community ties to heritage preservation. Laajverd and the Community Conservation Lab are carrying out conservation works bringing together scientific and indigenous knowlege for the protection of these endangered assets.
