Manchar Lake Mohannas – Safeguarding the last houseboat village from extinction

Restoration of traditional Mohana houseboats and youth training to preserve a threatened way of life in Sindh.

The traditional floating homes of the Mohana people on Manchar Lake are under threat from worsening drought and flooding linked to climate change. The NED University of Engineering and Technology will collaborate with the Mohana community to restore all 35 remaining houseboats. Young community members will be trained in restoration techniques, ensuring intergenerational transmission of heritage skills and preserving the Mohana way of life for the future.
