Mexico, San Cristóbal de Las Casas Archive
An earthquake and a subsequentinsect termite infestation are affecting the religious, historical archive of the San Critóbal de las Casas Archive in Chiapas, Mexico.
| The Diocesan Historical Archive of San Cristobal de las Casas, is located in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. The Cathedral complex was constructed in the 16th century and has served as the regional municipal, evangelical and historiographic record, since its foundation in 1528. The portion of the Diocesan Historical Archive which has been damaged is located only in a portion of the building attached to the back of the main cathedral church and is part of the same structure as the Cathedral. To enter the archive, one can pass through the atrium of the church of St. Nicholas. The whole complex was seriously damaged by the earthquakes of September 7 and 19. The archives need immediate stabilization as the structural damage has left the archival collection susceptible to rodents, insects and water damage. The entrance to the archives from the San Nicholas Church has partially collapsed and is creating a security risk to those who work in the archives and to the documents themselves which are now left exposed to the public. In general the archives have been underfunded for the past 5 years and need money to complete the digitization and cataloguing of their ethnographically rich documentation. This collection provides insight into the historic municipal, evangelical and anthropological narratives of majority of surrounding regional villages near San Cristobal de las casas. This collection also includes pertinent documentation on the greater transnational relationships within the Mexican-Guatemalan pacific.
