Documentation of Chinene and Dghwede in the language ecology of the UNHCR refugee camp of Minawao (Cameroon)
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
Chinene and Dghwede are two endangered languages of northeast Nigeria. Once spoken in villages in the Mandara mountains, their speakers were displaced across surrounding regions by Boko Haram deadly attacks. Since 2013, cohesive communities of speakers are settled in the UNHCR refugee camp of Minawao, in the Far-North Region of Cameroon, where Chinene and Dghwede are marginalized and practiced less frequently by younger generations. This community-centered project will document both languages and create local repositories for sustainable community use using innovative technologies. |
