Documentation of the language on disappearing in Western Yugur
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project documents the Western Yugur language by video and audio recordings and linguistic annotations, which are mainly naturalistic material. The Yugur people speak two ethnic languages, Eastern Yugur and Western Yugur. Eastern Yugur is a Mongolic language, while Western Yugur is a severely endangered Turkic language spoken solely in Northwest China. The 2020 Chinese census recorded 14,706 Yugurs and there are around 2,000 active Western Yugur speakers according to UNESCO (Moseley, 2010). |
