Documentation and Description of the Dza Language

The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).

Dza is an endangered language of the poorly known Bikwin-Jen group, spoken in Taraba and Adamawa states in Nigeria by an unknown number of speakers. This project aims to document Dza and produce a corpus (audio and video) of different genres of texts in the language. It is important to document this language now as storytelling, poetry, speech plays and other forms of verbal arts in the language are falling out of practice and not being transferred to children, as is increasingly the case of the language itself. The project also aims to produce a grammar, bilingual dictionaries (Dza - English and Dza - Hausa) and literacy primers for the teaching of Dza language.
