The Documentation of Kol Narratives in Bangladesh
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
Kol is an endangered language of the Munda family in northwestern Bangladesh. The Kol people have their own linguistic and cultural identity in terms of stories, games, and rituals that are entirely unique from those of other sister language-speaking communities. Specifically, the games in the rainy season and the marriage rituals are uniquely diverse. However, now the Kol people are worried about losing their mother tongue and native traditions. This project aims to document the visual narratives of the Kol people to preserve and achieve their unique linguistic and cultural attributes. |
