The documentation and description of Liki, an Austronesian language of Papua
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
Liki is a hitherto undescribed Austronesian language spoken in Liki island. The language is critically endangered with approximately 5 25 native speakers and the only remaining active speakers are people of the grandparent generation and older. The close extinction of Liki is undoubtedly caused by various complex factors such as urbanization and the dominance of a national language triggering to language shift. The project aims to build an extensive audio-visual archive of wordlist, local stories, and natural speech. |
