Survey and preservation of monastic manuscript collections in villages of Upper Myanmar
The project's objective was to survey manuscript collections in selected village monasteries in Upper Burma. From the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, these sites were important hubs of Buddhist learning, textual production, and manuscript circulation, yet the nature and dynamics of this manuscript culture were never documented in detail.
The objective of the project was to survey manuscript collections in selected village monasteries in Upper Burma. From the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, these sites were important hubs of Buddhist learning, textual production, and manuscript circulation, yet the nature and dynamics of this manuscript culture were never documented in any substantial detail. The project team visited 68 functioning and defunct monasteries in 37 villages and towns spread over 11 townships. Of these sites, 42 monasteries currently have surviving manuscripts, in 18 cases the collections have either been lost or shifted to other locations, and 8 monasteries are defunct (they were visited for the purpose of recording their location). Total manuscript count at 42 monasteries with surviving collections is estimated as 5,074 manuscripts or manuscript fragments. The project catalogued 1,225 manuscripts or manuscript fragments, of which 684 were documented in detail and 541 were listed or inventoried in a simplified way. Reports on twenty collections were prepared outlining information on the history and identity of surveyed monasteries, the nature and custodial history of collections, and the work carried out by the project team.
