Speak Sing Pray: diversity and special language use among the Medzeniakonai (Baniwa and Koripako) in Northwest Amazonia
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This projects aims to provide documentation of language use and variation of Medzeniako (aka Baniwa and Koripako languages/dialects; Arawakan family, Northwest Amazon). The documentation will focus on mythical narratives, ritual chants and shamanistic incantations, as well as on more ordinary situations of language use within the household, local schools and Christian churches. Its results will support research on language endangerment, linguistic diversification, lexicography, traditional knowledge, and the development local language policies by the Medzeniakonai people. |
