Initiating Language Documentation Program in Leti
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project is designed to initiate a documentation project on Leti, an endangered language spoken by around 600-700 people on Leti Island. It aims to collect natural speech of local folk stories, sung talks, and royal talks, which have been severely threatened. This project will create a linguistic database of Leti through audio, videos, and texts accompanied by transcription, glossing, and translation. This project is also expected to become an initial program to start designing the orthography by studying the sound pattern through the recorded data. |
