Initial documentation of Benggoi of Eastern Seram island
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project will provide initial documentation of the Benggoi language, a critically endangered language spoken in three villages in eastern Seram, Maluku, Indonesia. Current documentation is minimal, limited to a few wordlists and lexicostatistical analysis. Language shift has progressed increasingly quickly due to pressure from Indonesian, Javanese, and Geser-Gorom. In collaboration with speakers and Indonesian researchers, this project will provide audiovisual documentation of the language in any and all contexts in which it is still in use. |
