Documenting Kangjia: A Critically Endangered Mongolic Language

The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).

Kangjia is a critically endangered Mongolic language spoken in Kangyang Town, Jainca County, Qinghai Province of China. This project endeavors to document its phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and cultural relevance by collaborating with its few speakers and members of the language community. Through audio-video recordings, photos, and digital archiving, we aim to preserve this language and its culture, facilitate future research, and thus contribute to the linguistic diversity of the area.
