Documentation of Village Sign Languages in Nepal
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This pilot project brings together a group of deaf and hearing researchers with academic & community interests to document 3 small village sign languages in Nepal. It provides training in technical and ethical aspects of sign language documentation, technical equipment and financial resources for fieldwork to gather the data. It builds team capacity also for preparing the data (editing, annotation, translation) for upload and use in the online ELAR archive and 2 local print dictionary projects. Based on this pilot, we aim to develop a larger ELDP bid for local sign language documentation. |
