Documentation of the severely endangered languages Makurap and Wayoro (Brazil): material and non-material traditional culture, and its associated knowledge

The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).

This project will provide documentation for Makurap and Wayoro, two severely endangered Tupian languages, spoken in the Brazilian state of Rondôia. Wayoro has only two fluent speakers and 11 passive speakers. Makurap has only 45 fluent speakers. The project will gather audio and video recordings of communicative events, with a focus on material and non-material traditional culture, and its associated knowledge. The outcomes include documentation training for community members, a translated, transcribed and annotated corpus, a lexical database and a multimedia encyclopedia and dictionary.
