Documentation of Oinam
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project will document and describe Oinam, a critically endangered language spoken in Oinam village (one of the Poumai Naga villages), senapati district of Manipur, northeast India, through collection of audio and video recordings in genre of key cultural importance. Oinam is a Trans-Himalayan (or Tibeto-Burman) language, and is spoken by around 3000 people. Younger community members now use only Poula (Poumai Naga language), English, Manipuri and Hindi. Moreover, due to migration of the natives to nearby villages and towns, there are only few monolingual speakers in the village. There are no written materials available in this language. |
