Documentation of Guató, an endangered isolate from the Brazilian Pantanal
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
The aim of this project is to create a comprehensive collection of linguistic data in Guató, an extremely endangered language isolate of southwestern Brazil. The language will be documented with the help of its two last fluent speakers, Vicente da Silva and André de Oliveira. My focus will be on collecting traditional narratives, autobiographical testimonies, and procedural texts. Elicited material based on stimuli will also be recorded. The archival collection will preserve cultural knowledge associated with the language, e.g. ethnobiological information and elements of Guató cosmology. |
