Documentation of Chácobo, a language of the northern Bolivian Amazon.

The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide to for the linguistic documentation of endangered language and knowledge. Grantees create multimedia collection of endangered languages. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) housed at the library of SOAS University of London.

The project will document the Chácobo language, a southern Panoan language, spoken in the northern Bolivian Amazon in the department of Beni. Estimates of the number of contemporary speakers vary between 800 and 1200. The vitality of the language is strong in remote areas, however, the interaction with surrounding regional economies has intensified resulting in a generation of children who are not learning the language in certain areas. Documentation of the language is thus urgent. The outcome of this project will be 50 hours of video and audio recordings, 10 hours of which will be transcribed and translated in ELAN, and annotated in FLEX. 3 field trips totaling will be undertaken, totally 18 months in the field. The main output will be an extensive documentary corpus and a fairly comprehensive reference grammar of the Chácobo language. Primary investigator: Adam Tallman
