Documentation of Bum, a Grassfields language of Cameroon
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project will create a repository of the endangered language and oral traditions of Bum, a Grassfields language of Cameroon. Bum is made up of nearly 20 villages and the total population is approximately 21,000. The project will document lexico-grammatical codes and the sociolinguistic contexts in which the codes are used. Emphasis will be on documenting language use in natural conversations, complemented by monologic texts, which may be oratory or narratives both of factual and fictional content, including traditional text genres such as folktales, riddles and myths. |
