Collaborative documentation and description of Saparua: An endangered language of Maluku
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project is the first extensive study of Saparua (ISO 639-3 spr), an Austronesian language spoken by fewer than 10,200 speakers on Saparua island in Central Maluku, Indonesia. Research will take place over two years and will be a collaborative effort between linguists, local researchers, local governments, and the speaker community. The project has four primary outcomes: (1) a multifunctional documentary corpus of annotated audiovisual recordings; (2) description of Saparua that lays a foundation for a future grammar and language-learning materials; (3) a Saparua lexicon of 5,000-6,000 words; and (4) language documentation training and capacity building within the Saparua community. |
