A Comprehensive Documentation and Description of Champang: an endangered Tangsa Naga Language
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
The proposed project aims to continue documentation and description of Champang, also known as Thamphang , a highly endangered Tangsa Naga language spoken by not more than 200 people in the high Patkai mountain ranges running along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border regions in Northeast India (27°16 25 North and 95°45 41 East). The goal of this project is to document and describe the structure of the language as well as record oral histories. Specific outcomes include a detailed grammar, a lexical database, and an archived corpus of transcribed and analyzed audio and video recordings. |
