A collaborative documentation of Saihriem and Thiek: Two South-Central languages of the Cachar cluster
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project aims at a comprehensive documentation of Saihriem (600-700 speakers) and lhiek (3125 speakers) two South-Central languages of Cachar plains and hills. The 3-year research project will be a collaborative effort between linguists, academic institutions, and the speaker communities. The three-fold outcomes of the project are: 1. A multifunctional documentary corpus of annotated audio-visual recordings. 2. Community dictionaries for both the Saihriem and Thiek communities (as desired by the community). 3. Capacity building for community members and the students of Assam University. |
