Traditional Ecological Knowledge of the Awiakay and Meakambut, Papua New Guinea
The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).
This project documents traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and language use related to TEK of two language communities of the Arafundi language group: Awiakay (ca 400 speakers) and Meakambut (ca 60 speakers) in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. The communities are caught up in a goldrush and the radical social changes it brings. This documentation will ensure that the detailed knowledge about plants and animals found in this ecological area and transmitted through the two languages, is not lost. The project builds on previous long-term ethnographic fieldwork, including the documentation of Awiakay and Meakambut ways of speaking. |
