The Portable Antiquities Scheme (finds.org.uk) records archaeological finds discovered by the public, to advance knowledge, tell the stories of past communities and further public interest in the past. It is a partnership project, managed by the British Museum (in England) and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, working with 98 national and local organisations, and delivered through its network of 40 locally based archaeologists known as Finds Liaison Officers, the PAS Central Unit (in both countries) and National Finds Advisers, interns and community volunteers. To date the Portable Antiquities Scheme has recorded more than 1.4 million archaeological objects on it online database (finds.org.uk/database), most of which would otherwise not be recorded. This data is being used to advance our understanding of Britain's past, help involve the public more in archaeology, and identify new archaeological sites and those at risk.
