This project documents traditional New Year ceremonies in Hazārrud village in Tārom district of Zanjān province in Iran, as recounted by the remaining Tāti speakers of the village. The estimated number of Tāts with an active command of this variety is less than 10, all more than 70 years old. The traditional New Years celebrations are no longer actually performed in the village, where the language of wider communication is now a variety of Azeri Turkic, or increasingly, standard Persian. The Tāti dialect of Hazārrud has remained highly conservative when compared with other Tāti dialects, and along with the cultural content, the project will contribute to our understanding of the dynamics of language shift and change in the highly diverse, and rapidly declining, Tatic group of languages.
