Documentation of two Oceanic languages of New Ireland: Lavatbura-Lamusong and Konomala

The Endangered Language Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants worldwide for the documentation of endangered languages and knowledge. Grantees create audiovisual collections with transcription and translations of endangered languages and practices. These collections are preserved and made freely available through the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR).

The project entails the documentation and description of two so far completely undocumented Austronesian languages spoken in New Ireland (Papua New Guinea): Lavatbura-Lamusong (ca. 1300 speakers) and Konomala (ca. 800 speakers). Both languages are under pressure from Tok Pisin, the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea; in many villages, inter-generational transmission is precarious at best. The project will ensure a long-lasting record of Lavatbura-Lamusong and Konomala through the creation of an audio-video corpus, documenting a vaste range of speech genres. Special attention will be given to documenting language change and language shift processes in the two communities.
